Situated in the beautiful city of York, The St Denys is a small hotel on a quiet street within the central core of the city. We are a pleasant, level, ten minute walk through the city centre to York Minster, passing most of York’s attractions, shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars on the way. Housed in a detached Victorian building, we have eleven bedrooms with one, our Biggest Room, on the ground floor. Our ground floor room has an en suite bathroom with bath and shower over and can be arranged as a twin or superking double. Several of our upstairs rooms have shower cubicles with a small step to access them. There are four steps leading to the front door, but once inside there is level access to Reception and the guest sitting and dining room. Staff are available to help twenty four hours a day, with an on-duty night manager. Getting to us The St Denys is easily accessible from York Train Station: it is less than a 20 minute walk away, a 5 minute/£5 taxi ride or a 10 minute bus ride (Number 44 from Rail Station Stop D). If you require an accessible taxi this can be booked in advance, see contact information below for details. You can plan your journey by car or public transport using www.TransportDirect.info; just enter your postcode and ours (YO1 9QD) to get directions. The main roads throughout the city are wide enough for most wheelchairs. A number of local companies can supply equipment for hire, see contact information below for details. Car Parking and Arrival There is limited car parking on site available on a first come, first served basis, however it is always possible to park at the hotel to load/unload passengers and luggage. The car park is higher than street level with a ramp down to the pavement and a somewhat uneven tarmac surface. It is reasonably well lit at night and our friendly staff are on hand to help with bags. Entrance and Reception To enter the building there are four steps from street level to the front door, the first of approximately 6 cm. We have a temporary ramp (S.W.L. 240kg) which we can put in place over the other three steps (approx. 14cm, 17cm and 17cm respectively). However, the gradient is pretty steep however at about 1:3 Once inside the building Reception is on the ground floor and has pale-coloured, tiled flooring, white woodwork and mid-grey walls. The area is well and evenly lit with overhead lighting. The Reception desk is 105 cm high, but alternative arrangements will be made as necessary. Stairs and upstairs corridor From reception, the main stairs lead to the first floor in a flight of 20 steps with a landing after 13 steps. The stairs have fitted thick pile dark grey carpeting, white woodwork and mid-grey walls and they are well lit with overhead lighting. There is an 89 cm high handrail on one side of the stairs and each step is 14 cm high and 29 cm deep. The corridor also has fitted thick pile dark grey carpeting, white woodwork and mid-grey walls and is well lit with overhead lighting. The rear emergency exit stairs have tartan carpet and white walls and wall lighting. Guest sitting and dining room The guest sitting and dining room on the ground floor has step-free access from reception (the doorway is 79 cm wide). The room is floored with smooth floorboards of a dark wood colour and the walls are a cream colour. The room is well lit from a mixture of ceiling lights and wall lights and natural light during the day from the conservatory section. There is a mixture of seating and tables and chairs in the room (sofas, upholstered armless chairs, wooden chairs with pads) with the dining chairs varying between 39 and 49 cm high. The dining tables are 78 cm square and 74 cm high with legs at each corner. Juice and cereal at breakfast is usually self service from the breakfast bar (~110 cm high), sideboard (~83 cm high) and cabinet (wall mounted, between 105 cm and 166 cm high) and tea, coffee, toast and cooked breakfast is via waiter service, though staff are on hand throughout should any assistance be required and are more than happy to take orders for any part of the meal. Public loo There is a public loo with step free access from the dining room. There are no grab rails or special fittings. Bedrooms The bedrooms are of varying shapes and sizes but all are fitted with thick pile dark grey carpeting with white woodwork and are well lit with 100 watt equivalent LED overhead lighting and 40 watt equivalent LED bedside lamps. All bedrooms have en suite bathrooms, some with showers only and some with baths and showers over. All of the baths on the first floor have chrome grab rails to either side. The bathroom floors are either slip resistant to R10 rating or ceramic floor tiles. None of the bathrooms are fitted with special fixtures or fittings in terms of accessibility. There is 1 bedroom on the ground floor and ten bedrooms of varying sizes and shapes on the first floor reached via a flight of stairs with 20 steps and a sturdy wooden Victorian handrail. Each step is around 16cm high, 30cm deep and 100cm wide. Ground floor bedroom Once you have accessed the building via the four steps at the front door there is level access to the ground floor bedroom and from here to the guest sitting/dining room. The entrance to this room 85 cm wide with the door opening away from you into the bedroom. Furniture in this room can be removed or rearranged if requested. The ‘superking’ size (183 cm wide) bed has a 2000 pocket sprung mattress with wool topper on a divan base and the height of the bed is 68 cm from the floor to the top of the topper. The doorway to the bathroom is 65 cm wide and the bathroom contains a bath with a shower over. The bathroom floor is slip resistant vinyl. There are no grab rails in the bathroom.
