Lowther House: The Enchanting Woodland B&B

Set at the end of a two hundred metre drive in a clearing in Pickering Woods, Lowther House is a million miles from city living, yet is just a ten minute stroll down a tree-lined avenue into Pickering Town Centre.

The house is bordered on two sides by Pickering Beck and is part of the Duchy of Lancaster Estate - our beautiful home is owned by "Her Most Excellent Majesty Queen Elizabeth II".

A few hundred metres away runs one of the world's first railways - now over 175 years old, the Pickering to Whitby Line. Built by George Stephenson it even predates steam, originally the trains were pulled by horses and even a winch was used over the steepest parts! Today it's part of the North York's Moors Steam Heritage Railway.

The house sits between the North York Moors National Park - which you can walk into from our gate, it's all of 300 metres! - and the Yorkshire Wolds to the south, making it the perfect location for exploring some of the most spectacular scenery in all of England.

We pride ourselves on the freshness and quality of our food, all our fresh food is purchased from local butchers, bakers, greengrocers, fishmongers and grocery stores ensuring we know when and where it grew or was made.

Meals can be served in the dining room; the deck or terrace, weather permitting.
Gardens and Cafe

Please feel free to wander in our lovely gardens – we can lend you a net so you can try fishing for Brown Trout, if you catch a big enough one we can cook it for you, but mostly they're tiny and you have to throw them back!

The rear garden also forms part of our café and tearoom from 10 - 6 every day, snacks and lunches are available.

We cater for picnics on the lawn under the apple trees as well, a delightful way to spend an hour or two!

The lovely riverside country garden is a haven of tranquillity, during the summer months people were invited to picnic under the apple trees rather than sit at tables, dogs could splash in the beck, and everyone could sit relaxing under a parasol watching the steam trains of the NYMR puffing by.

Now that summer has gone, we are opening our ‘Den’ five days a week. Tea, coffee, pastries and snacks are available as well as lunches, with extra-special lunches being served on Sundays.

Our food can be quite eclectic, reflecting our taste for unusual dishes from around the world, on any one day there may be Mexican, Texan, Italian dishes available, as well as comfy British favourites.

Sunday Lunches are really something - traditional fare, but with a distinctive twist! Please take a look at the monthly Sunday menus as well as the weekday one.

The garden deck area will be open with umbrellas all winter to accommodate hardy hikers, bikers and dog walkers too!

    “Excellent B&B”

We were made very welcome, a lovely room with tea/coffee (including a smallfridge with fresh milk) biscuits & jug iced water. Our hosts explained "the wet room" ensuite which we found very easy to use. Breakfast was amazing freshly prepared quality ingredients cooked to perfection. Garden was lovely with birds singing & enjoying treats in bird feeders a small stream with water running by & steam trains, a perfect & tranquil location would highly recommend staying.
